Most sci-fi movies will provide your ears with some form of electronic music in order to make you think “This must be the sound of the future”. The problem with that is, most of the time the music will sound of the time it was produced in. Thus, the dark synth from the soundtrack of a 1980s sci-fi movie will always sound 80s. No matter how conceptual. This isn’t a bad thing. It’s just something that is ultimately inevitable.

Then you get things like the soundtrack from Akira, which purely goes for creating atmosphere using vocals and various percussion instruments. I don’t even know what genre it would fall into. All I know is that it is absolutely brilliant. Put on your biker gear, straddle a chair and listen to the sweet sounds of my favourite track from the movie…Kaneda.

Check out the track here!
